They are not only lifelines for numerous habitats but also significant contributors to sea and ocean pollution when neglected. Research, including a study published in “Environmental Science & Technology” in 2017, has indicated that rivers contribute to a significant portion of ocean plastic pollution, with some estimates suggesting that 80-90% of ocean plastic in some regions originates from land-based sources funnelled through these waterways. By concentrating our efforts on river ecology, we’re directly targeting a primary source of the problem, addressing ocean pollution right at its inception.
